Response to Julia's Blog
To be completely honest, I thought that Julia was going to ask us to watch those cringe-worthy YouTube videos about a crazy girlfriend, but when I watched the videos that she posted I was laughing so hard, especially with the song "Face Your Fears." I'm a sucker for song humor such as Tenacious-D and Weird Al Yankovic. Something about humorous phrases being put to music is hysterical to me. So when the woman started singing about facing a bear instead of running away, I knew I was in for a treat. This absolutely demonstrates the theory of incongruity as songs are typically more serious and we naturally associate them with a rather serious tone, so when suddenly they are funny, it amplifies the humor through surprise. When the children's choir joined in, it was over for me. The response they added to each lyric was well-written and well-timed.
As for the second song, I found it humorous in its own right. The singer's nihilistic tone in his acknowledgement of his not being the first choice and own admission of "self-hate" were so sudden but so funny. The writers of the show clearly understand incongruity. I'm also just impressed with the effort that clearly went into these scenes. They could have very easily made them sort of halfway done cheap songs, but they put effort into creating scenes with interesting lyrics and impressive choreography. This is not an easy feat but they felt strongly enough about what they were doing so props to them for that.
As stated before, I very much enjoy musical comedy, such as the episode done by the cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the one done by That 70's Show, and this has given me another great example. So thank you so much, Julia!

I always love the musical show. It reminds me too of Always Sunny which has the best musical episodes, which tend to be the best episodes. I was pleasantly surprised by the show which I thought would be awful based on its title. I wonder if that is part of its charm in a way, that it doesn't end up just being guys complaining of a crazy ex.
