Deadpool is awesome. I had to get that out into the open before anything else because frankly this movie did something wonderful. The only other movie interpretation of Deadpool was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and that movie kind of sucked. Deadpool had his mouth sewn shut and didn't have his signature costume. Ryan Reynolds played this version of Deadpool and was so upset about it that he spent the next few years trying to get an accurate version of Deadpool made. Finally his dream came to fruition with this new movie. Upon its opening, Deadpool became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. This is due to the deserved hype surrounding it. Clearly love and passion fueled this project and it showed in the final product. I think that it improved itself in its sequel, Deadpool 2. But the first movie laid an immediate groundwork for what was to come with its opening scene.
We find our hero perched on an overpass, rapping "Shoop" by Salt and Peppa and drawing a crude picture of himself beating up some baddies. He then proceeds to step off of the overpass and drop directly into an SUV. Deadpool then destroys all of those surrounding him while making inappropriate jokes. This is a perfect use of benign violation. This movie has a much higher threshold for what could have passed as appropriate and it uses that fully to its advantage.
Deadpool also breaks the fourth wall frequently throughout the movie. One of my favorite examples is when he addresses the audience at the end of the movie dressed like Ferris Buehler and tells the audience to go him. He brought another one of my favorite movies into play and spoofed it hilariously. My absolute favorite example is when Deadpool's girlfriend pulls off his mask after he rescues her, only to reveal that he has stapled a picture of Hugh Jackman to his face. This is hilarious as Hugh Jackman played Wolverine, somebody who Ryan Reynolds played against in the failed movie mentioned earlier. Also Deadpool and the X-Men are owned by FOX but there's weird bureaucracy involved and so we only get vague references to each other as a broad whole, that is until the second Deadpool film where a door opens, revealing all of the X-Men staring back at him. Deadpool is a very smartly written comedy-action film and I enjoy it wholeheartedly.

  1. I totally agree with you. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when he addresses the audience. I think it is what makes the movie very funny. The scene where his girlfriend pulls off his mask is another good scene. I also agree with you on how most of the movie is benign violation.

  2. I missed the Ferris Buehler riff at the end. I will have to go and look for it. I had no idea that Ryan Reynolds didn't like the Deadpool aspect of Origins. I remember seeing it. I wonder why he went to such lengths to do this? Was it a commentary on the other franchise?

  3. I never knew that Deadpool was briefly mentioned in X-Men. Maybe that's he made that inappropriate about him in the opening scenes.

  4. I like how you brought in X-Men and related it back to that. Very interesting response with lots of information that I did not know until now.
