Response to Lola's Post
I am a large fan of both the horror and comedy genres, so naturally when they are combined I enjoy it. Scream, Krampus, and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil are all great examples of the two genres meshing well and it seems as though Jennifer's Body is a good addition to that lineup. While never actually seeing the movie in its entirety, I have seen bits and pieces. Of course, this was a long time ago when I viewed the movie almost entirely as a horror film. I have never considered the plausibility of it being a parody of Mean Girls but it does actually make a lot of sense. It's essentially focusing in on the character of Regina George and then puts her slightly over the line by having her be possessed by a demon.
Lola discussed a scene in which Needy's boyfriend Chip asks Jennifer how she is doing, to which she responds, "Eat my ass, Chip." I found this incredibly funny because I find that phrase hysterical. But also it's so unexpected and rude that it slams home the use of Benign Violation as well as Incongruity Theory. It's a great scene that captures two comedic properties very well. It's also rather funny that Jennifer really only changes in her appetite when possessed, she was always rather mean, but the demon just made her murderous as well. It's a nice metaphor for the attitudes of high school mean girls as eating the self-esteems of those around them. It could also be construed as a metaphor for STD's as every guy she's will ends up dead, just like someone promiscuous can end up with others infected. The movie may not have performed well with critics, but it seems like a fun horror-comedy that I'll be sure to check out.

I have never scene the movie as well, but I really would like to too. I agree with you on how the "Eat my ass, Chip" scene shows Benign Violation and Incongruity Theory very well. I feel like the movie really encompasses these two theories.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good idea to make a movie that focuses heavily on a character like Regina George. She was arguably the most popular character in Mean Girls and many of the girls I know today still annoy me with some of her famous lines.
ReplyDeleteI somehow missed the movie a few years ago. Why do you think it was panned by critics?
ReplyDeleteI thought you had a great metaphor to how mean girls eat people's self esteems. That was interesting and I never thought about it that way, but it is very accurate.
