Superbad is such a wonderful movie. One of the wonderful things about it is the fact that it was a passion project for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. I've read multiple places that the two wanted to create this film and recount different parts of their teenage years and frankly it turned into one of the greatest teen comedy films, if not greatest comedy films, of all time. Passion clearly dictated them into putting a ton of effort into creating this raunchy, gut-busting, awkward movie. That is the beautiful thing about passion; it can turn what could have been something very standard into something incredible. For comedy we have Superbad, for horror we have Hereditary, for drama we have The Room (I joke, but it truly is incredible in its own right).
Superbad gave us the absolutely iconic character McLovin. He is referenced quite often just due to the sheer awkwardness of the character. The role helped Christopher Mintz-Plasse's career take off. Jonah Hill also has this film to thank for his career. Michael Cera's awkward presence was already somewhat known by this point, but the film certainly helped. Another one of my favorite scenes involves one of our protagonists finally getting to dance with a (drunk) girl. He's having the time of his life until after they finish dancing and she walks away only for him to look down and see that she started her period on his leg. It's so delightfully uncomfortable but we also relate to him because every high schooler has had some embarrassing moment happen to them. That's part of what makes this movie so funny; we all relate to it. Most everybody has wanted to fit in with the "cool crowd" and the movie plays off of that beautifully. Not to mention Bill Hader and Seth Rogen's roles as the cops are just hysterical. Superbad is the ultimate teen comedy.

  1. I had no idea that Hereditary was a passion project. I definitely see how it fits, though, considering the strong aspect of personal background. The whole series of scenes at the other party are so painful and awkward but also amazing. And the laundry detergent bottles is priceless. The original tide pod meme?

  2. I like the connections you drew to seemingly unrelated films. Also Hereditary is incredible.

  3. I liked how you mentioned how relatable this movie is because everyone goes through awkward and embarrassing moments during high school, and because we are able to relate to them it makes the film that much funnier.

  4. I believe the awkward vibes that Superbad gives off is something that many people love about the movie. Everyone at some point in their lives go through their an awkward teen phase which can make Superbad very relatable.
